Toll changes in the second half of 2025

Written by Admin | Sep 1, 2025 8:00:00 AM

General

2G/4G transition: Several countries are beginning to modernise their toll on-board units (OBUs), with a focus on 4G technology.

EETS proliferation: Increasing integration of European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) for cross-border use.

The switch to 4G toll devices is crucial for future toll processing in view of the global shutdown of outdated 2G networks. 2G technology can no longer meet today's requirements for speed, capacity and security. The switch to 4G offers advantages such as a more stable, faster connection; support for emerging new functionality; and expanded usage options in various toll contexts.
The 2G network shutdown is imminent in the following countries:

  •  Switzerland:
    •  Shutdown already completed
  • France:
    • Orange - 31 December 2025
    • Telecom/SFR – 31 December 2026
  • Netherlands:
    • Vodafone – 31 December 2026
    • KPN – 1 December 2027
  • Norway:
    • Telia – 31 July 2025
    • Telenor – 31 December 2027
  • Sweden:
    • Tele2 - 31 December 2025
    • Telia – 31 December 2027

We suggest you switch to 4G now to avoid bottlenecks and make the most of the modern technology.

Italy
A CO₂ toll will be introduced in Italy on 1 March 2026. The new tariff structure includes price adjustments benefitting lower-emission vehicles. This is a significant step towards implementing EU environmental requirements promoting transport transparency.

Poland
From 1 July 2026, a CO₂-based toll will also be introduced in Poland. National systems will be modernised to meet EU standards with the aim of promoting low-emissions transport.
