Since 1 January 2025, an ‘accurate’ toll system for commercial vehicles with an F.1 weight of 12 tonnes or more has applied in Denmark, replacing the previous time-based vignette. The levy depends on the distance driven, weight and carbon emission class, and is processed via an approved OBU or a digital KmToll ticket.
Passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles under 12 tonnes F.1 weight are exempt. For special routes such as the Storebæltbrücke or Øresundbrücke, separate fees are incurred that are not included in the KmToll tariffs.

General information
Toll provider: Sund & Bælt Holding A/S
The toll system in Denmark is used to finance and maintain the road network and promote an environmentally friendly transport infrastructure. Since 1 January 2025, commercial vehicles with an F.1 weight of 12 tonnes or more have had to pay an ‘accurate’ toll, which is graduated according to the carbon emissions class of the vehicle.
This state-of-the-art electronic toll solution makes it easier to map the use of infrastructure – both in terms of distance driven and emissions behaviour – thus contributing to sustainable financing of the operation, maintenance and expansion of the Danish road system.
Vehicles subject to tolls
In Denmark, the general mandatory toll applies to commercial vehicles with an F.1 weight of 12 tonnes or more. Invoicing is done to the exact kilometre and depends on weight and carbon emissions class. Commercial vehicles weighing less than 12 tonnes F.1 and personal transport vehicles are exempt from the toll; some fees for bridges, tunnels and ferries are charged.

HGV toll in Denmark
In Denmark, a heavy-duty charge is payable for trucks weighing 12 tonnes or more. It applies to motorways and dual carriageways, while personal transport vehicles and commercial vehicles weighing less than 12 tonnes F.1 are exempt from the toll. The system is used to finance, maintain and expand road infrastructure while also supporting environmentally friendly mobility.
Toll-paying commercial vehicles from 12 tonnes F.1 weight
The mandatory toll applies to heavy goods vehicles weighing 12 tonnes F.1 or more. Payment is made via on-board unit (OBU / toll box) or by booking a digital KmToll ticket. Cameras with automatic number plate recognition at fixed and mobile control points check whether a route was correctly paid via the satellite-supported vehicle device or the digital ticket.
The amount of the toll depends on the distance travelled, weight and carbon emissions class of the vehicle. In addition, special routes such as the Storebælt bridge and the Øresund bridge are charged, which are not included in the KmToll tariffs and are determined by the respective toll operator.
Carbon toll
Since 1 January 2025, Danish tolls have been charged based ondistance travelled and carbon emissions class. Vehicles with higher emissions pay higher fees, while lower-emission trucks incur reduced fares. The toll thus contributes to the sustainable use of infrastructure and to a reduction in the environmental impact of heavy transport.

Toll payment
Depending on vehicle type, Danish tolls are paid using different systems:
For vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes
- Cars and light commercial vehicles under 3.5 tonnes do not incur tolls on most roads.
- The exception is special routes such as the Storebælt bridge or the Øresund bridge, on which even light vehicles are subject to charge. Payment is made online, via apps or directly at the toll booth.
For commercial vehicles weighing 12 tonnes F.1 or more
- Heavy duty vehicles weighing 12 tonnes F.1 or more pay the toll according to distance travelled, route taken, weight and carbon emissions class.
- Invoicing takes place via an on-board unit (OBU) or digital KmToll ticket.
- Companies can pay toll fees online, via the app or via authorised service providers, enabling transport costs to be managed transparently and precisely.
The Danish toll system thus guarantees simple, flexible and legally secure processing for all road users – from occasional drivers to logistics companies.
