Funding landscape 2026: Focus on charging infrastructure

In Germany, the corporate transition to electromobility is supported by various funding programmes from the federal government, as well as state and municipality offerings. These programmes are listed below.

BMDV funding for 2026: Charging infrastructure for heavy-duty commercial vehicles (electric trucks)

Overview and funding objectives

The German government is setting aside €200 million for the development and expansion of charging infrastructure for electric trucks (source: BMDV – Funding Guidelines for Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles in Road Traffic), part of a multi-year, €1 billion funding programme through 2030. The programmes are designed for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and designed to minimise red tape. Note that funding is not contingent on number of vehicles or their procurement—the focus is on the development of the charging infrastructure. 

Key objectives of the guidelines

• Accelerating the market for electric trucks

• Establishing a nationwide charging network in accordance with AFIR requirements (Source: EU Regulation on the Deployment of Alternative Fuels Infrastructure)

• Supporting the decarbonisation of road freight transport through GHG emissions reductions

BMDV funding 2026: Charging infrastructure for electric vehicles

The funding programme is divided into three calls for proposals:

Technical requirements

Non-public charging points:

• Minimum charging power of 50 kW DC per charging point

• Suitable for vehicle classes N2 and N3

Public chargingstations:

• Minimum charging capacity of 100 kW DC per charging point

• At least 1,500 kW per location

• At least one charging point with capacity of ≥ 350 kW

Eligible measures

Funding available not only for charging points, but also for:

• Grid connections

• Charging, load and energy management systems

• Battery storage

• Necessary civil engineering work

Prerequisite: The above must  be necessary for operation.

Funding amount and application process

For SMEs (Call A):

• Fixed amount of €500 (net) per kW of installed charging capacity
• Application period: 5 June to 30 September 2026
• Funds awarded on a first-come, first-served basis (in the order applications are received), as long as funds are available

• May 2026: Publication of guidelines and first call for proposals

Overview of state programmes

Berlin: Business-Oriented Electric Mobility (WELMO)

 The WELMO programme of Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB – WELMO Funding Program) offers comprehensive support:

• Type of funding: Grant for the purchase or lease of AC charging infrastructure, including grid connection

• Funding amount: Up to a 45% grant for charging infrastructure, electric vehicles and fleets

• Areas: Consulting, energy efficiency, infrastructure

• Eligible recipients: Companies, municipalities, public institutions

Hamburg: ELBE (Electric Mobility for Businesses)

The Hamburg Investment and Development Bank (IFB Hamburg – ELBE Funding Program) supports businesses with attractive terms:

• Funding amount: Up to a 50% grant for vehicles and charging infrastructure

• Eligible applicants: Businesses, self-employed individuals and freelancers

North Rhine-Westphalia: Progres.NRW – Low-Emission Mobility

The Arnsberg District Government (Progres.NRW – Low-Emission Mobility) provides funding for the development of non-public charging infrastructure:

• Wallboxes: 40% grant, up to €1,500

• Charging infrastructure: 20% grant, up to €50,000

• Consulting: 50% grant, up to €15,000

• Funding type: Grant of up to 40% (20% for some components)

• Areas: Infrastructure, energy efficiency

• Eligible recipients: Businesses, private individuals, municipalities

Funding situation in federal states

Here’s the current outlook:

• Bavaria: No programmes available at the moment

• Saarland/Brandenburg: Very little funding activity

• Saxony: Some funding opportunities available

• Thuringia: Smaller programmes available
