End of the 2G network in France
31 December 2026 will see the shutdown of 2G networks in France. This means that toll devices based on 2G technology will not function after this date. If you don’t have a compatible on-board unit (OBU), you need to replace it with a 4G-compatible device to avoid service interruptions and fines when passing through toll gates.
The new R-Pass system in Alsace
On 1 January 2027, a new GNSS-based toll system will be launched in Alsace for vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes—a significant change in how tolls are collected in the region.
Expansion to the Grand Est Region
This is just the beginning. The R-Pass system will expand to the Grand Est Region (including Alsace, Lorraine and Champagne-Ardenne) starting 1 April 2027. The expansion will cover 525 km of toll road network and major cities including Strasbourg, Metz, Nancy and Reims.

What do fleet managers need to do
Don't wait until the last minute. Here's what you can do now to prepare:
- Assess your equipment: Check if you're using 2G devices that require replacement
- Choose a new device: Select either UTA One next or UTA RoadPass Pro based on your operational needs
- Contact support: If you're unsure which device is right for you, contact the UTA customer service team or your usual UTA sales representative
- Order via UTA Service Center: Log in to the UTA customer portal to block old devices and order new ones
- Return your old devices: You have one month from deactivation to return devices to UTA to avoid fees
