tolls-bulgaria-uta-edenred

On motorways and A and B roads in Bulgaria, a mandatory toll applies to all vehicles except motorcycles. Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and camper vans (regardless of weight) require an electronic vignette. For vehicles over 3.5 tonnes – with the exception of camper vans – payment is made via a Route Pass or on-board unit (OBU). This means that the use of the road network is transparently regulated and that infrastructure is financed sustainably.

General information

Toll provider: BGTOLL

The toll system in Bulgaria is an essential part of the financing and maintenance of the national transport infrastructure. It contributes to the maintenance and expansion of motorways and first and second class roads, and to the long-term sustainability of road traffic. The National Toll Administration (BGTOLL), which operates the system on behalf of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works, is responsible for payment collection and administration.

The Bulgarian toll system differentiates between vehicle categories and billing models: A time-dependent electronic vignette applies to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and camper vans (regardless of weight). Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes – with the exception of camper vans – pay the toll depending on the route via a Route Pass or an on-board unit (OBU).

With its modern electronic toll system, Bulgaria guarantees fair distribution of costs, efficient use of road infrastructure and sustainable financing of construction, operation and maintenance of the nationwide road network.

In Bulgaria, all commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are subject to tolls. Fees are charged on motorways and A and B roads to finance, maintain and expand road infrastructure. The National Toll Administration (BGTOLL) is responsible for the administration and control of the system.

Vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes are subject to tolls

Trucks, buses and other commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes pay a route-dependent toll that is  billed via an on-board unit (OBU) or Route Pass. Fees are based on the route taken, number of axles, weight and emissions class of the vehicle, and can be  viewed on the BGTOLL website .

Toll-exempt vehicles

Vehicles belonging to police, fire and rescue services as well as certain agricultural vehicles are exempt from tolls.

Objective of the toll system

The Bulgarian toll system ensures fair distribution of costs and sustainable financing of the road network. It supports environmentally friendly transport by taking into account emissions classes.

streamline-icon-carCar tolls in Bulgaria

In Bulgaria, all cars and camper vans weighing up to 3.5 tonnes driving on motorways and A and B roads require a valid electronic vignette (e-vignette). Buses are exempt from the charge.

Since e-vignettes are vehicle-related and digitally registered in the system, paper copies do not need to be carried in the vehicle. Bookings can be made online via the BGTOLL app, self-service terminals or sales outlets. Alternatively, you can book via the UTA Card.

The validity period of the vignette can be flexibly specified – from one day to one year – and is therefore suitable for both occasional and frequent drivers.

Prices are uniform for cars, while camper vans (regardless of weight) fall under the vignette system. Driving without a valid e-vignette is strictly controlled and can result in significant fines.

The Bulgarian car toll thus offers a modern, transparent and simple way to use the road network – with digital administration, flexible timescales and legally secure billing.

In Bulgaria, there are different solutions for toll payments depending on the vehicle type:

For vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes

  • For cars and caravans up to 3.5 tonnes, the toll is paid via electronic vignette (e-vignette).
  • E-vignettes can be purchased online, via the "BGTOLL app", at self-service terminals and sales outlets, or via the UTA Card.
  • Since the vignette is registered digitally, no paper copy is required in the vehicle. The flexible period of validity makes the system practical and easy for both occasional and frequent drivers.

For vehicles over 3.5 tonnes

  • The toll is paid via an on-board unit (OBU) or route booking ("Route Pass") depending on the route. This takes into account the route taken, number of axles, weight and emissions class of the vehicle.
  • Payment is made online, via app or via UTA Card, enabling companies to more easily control their transport costs.

The Bulgarian toll system thus enables simple, flexible and legally secure payment of fees – regardless of whether road users are independent car drivers or part of transport and logistics companies.
