In Czechia, all motorways and selected federal roads are subject to a mandatory toll. The toll system is used to finance, maintain and expand the transport infrastructure and is managed by the operator CzechToll on behalf of the Czech Ministry of Transport. The amount and type of toll depends on the total permissible weight of the vehicle and respective vehicle category.

While vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must be equipped with an on-board unit (OBU), a digital vignette is required for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.

General information

Toll provider: CzechToll

The toll in Czechia is a central part of the financing, maintenance and modernisation of the road and motorway network. It ensures that motorways, dual carriageways and important transit routes remain safe, developed and efficient. The Czech toll system combines electronic invoicing for trucks over 3.5 tonnes with the mandatory digital vignettes for vehicles  up to 3.5 tonnes. The toll amount depends on vehicle class, weight, number of axles, emissions class and distance driven.

The mandatory toll encompasses the country’s motorways and dual carriageways as well as select federal roads for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.

The Czech toll system offers a transparent, fair and modern solution for road users. Automatic identification and digital monitoring ensure compliance with mandatory tolls and contribute to road safety. Drivers can choose from various payment options, including online purchase, prepaid systems, card payment or direct payment via the OBU, which allows flexible, comfortable and legally secure use of toll roads.

In Czechia, tolls are mandatory on all motorways and select federal roads. The toll is used to finance, maintain and expand Czech transport infrastructure. Vehicles under 3.5 tonnes, such as cars, require a digital vignette, while trucks over 3.5 tonnes are billed via an on-board unit (OBU).

Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes subject to tolls

All trucks and buses over 3.5 tonnes of gross weight are subject to tolls in Czechia. The toll box (OBU) automatically records distance travelled on motorways and select federal roads and calculates the charges accordingly. The toll amount depends on the vehicle category, number of axles, permissible total weight and emissions class. Data transfer is satellite-supported, ensuring accurate, automated billing.

Toll-exempt vehicles

Police, fire, rescue, emergency response and armed forces vehicles are exempt from tolls. Certain agricultural and forestry vehicles are also exempt. In addition, low-emission vehicles with alternative drives – such as electric or hydrogen trucks – benefit from toll discounts.

Police, fire, rescue, emergency response and armed forces vehicles are exempt from tolls. Certain agricultural and forestry vehicles are also exempt. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes with electric or hydrogen drivetrains are exempt from tolls until 31/12/2025. However, an on-board unit (OBU) must be used and the exemption must be applied for from the toll operator.

Carbon toll

The Czech truck toll has been CO₂-differentiated since 2024. This means: the amount of the toll also depends on the carbon emissions of the vehicle. Vehicles with high emissions pay higher toll rates while environmentally friendly vehicles with low or no carbon emissions benefit from reductions. The aim of the regulation is to make road transport more climate-friendly and promote sustainable technologies.

For vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, vignettes are mandatory on all Czech motorways. There is no longer a classic adhesive vignette – instead it is electronically recorded via the vehicle registration number plate.

E-vignettes
can be easily purchased online, at fuel stations or via vending machines at border crossings. The validity period is either 10 days, 30 days or 1 year. Upon purchase, the number plate is registered in the system - meaning that physical vignettes are not required.

Compliance with mandatory vignettes is monitored via automatic camera systems and license plate scanners. Vehicles travelling on toll roads without a valid vignette are subject to fines.

The toll is charged differently depending on vehicle class.

For vehicles under 3.5 tonnes

The car toll in Czechia is billed via the digital vignette (e-vignette). When purchased online or at sales outlets, the number plate is registered and the validity of the vignette is stored in the central system. A physical vignette is not required. Monitoring is carried out automatically via camera systems that scan number plates and compare them with the database. Drivers can check the status of their vignette online at any time.

Payment can be made via credit card, bank transfer or cash at authorised sales outlets. Violations of the vignettes obligation are automatically recorded and sanctioned with fines.

For vehicles over 3.5 tonnes

For trucks and buses over 3.5 tonnes, billing is undertaken via CzechToll’s electronic toll system , based on modern satellite technology (GNSS). The toll device (OBU) records the precise routes travelled and transmits the data in real time to the billing system.
The amount of the toll depends on:
  • distance travelled,
  • number of axes,
  • permissible total weight,
  • street class (motorway, dual carriageway, federal dual carriageway) and
  • emissions class or CO₂ category of vehicle.

Payment can be pre-paid or post-paid. Registration of the vehicle with CzechToll is required for use, which can be carried out online, at select contact points along primary transit routes or via UTA Edenred by placing an order in the UTA Service Center.
