In Slovakia, all motorways and most dual carriageways are subject to a mandatory toll for trucks over 3.5 tonnes, which is billed via the state electronic on-board unit (OBU). The toll serves to finance, maintain and expand transport infrastructure and ensures that roads remain safe and efficient.
Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes subject to tolls
Trucks and other vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are subject to tolls in Slovakia. The on-board unit automatically records distances travelled and calculates the charges. The amount of the toll depends on the distance driven, number of axles, permissible total weight and emissions class of the vehicle.
Toll-exempt vehicles
Rescue, police, fire and emergency response vehicles are exempt from tolls. Certain agricultural and forestry vehicles and vehicles with diplomatic licence plates do not have to pay tolls. In addition, low-emissions or alternative drive vehicles benefit from discounts.
Carbon toll
The CO₂-differentiated toll in Slovakia takes into account the emission class of the vehicle. Trucks with higher carbon emissions pay higher fees, while eco-friendly vehicles get discounts. The system is intended to make freight transport more sustainable and promote climate-friendly technologies.
