In Slovenia, motorways and dual carriageways are subject to mandatory tolls from the state-owned company DARS. Vehicles under 3.5 tonnes, such as cars and motorcycles, require a digital vignette, while trucks over 3.5 tonnes are billed via an on-board unit (OBU).
Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes subject to tolls
All trucks and vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are subject to tolls in Slovenia. The OBU automatically records distance travelled and calculates the charges. The amount of the toll depends on distance driven, number of axles, weight and the emissions class of the vehicle.
Toll-exempt vehicles
Tolls do not apply to rescue, police, fire and emergency response vehicles, or certain agricultural and forestry vehicles. Vehicles with low emissions or alternative drives can also benefit from discounts.
Carbon toll
The CO₂-differentiated toll takes into account a vehicle’s emissions class. Trucks with higher CO₂ values pay higher fees, while climate-friendly vehicles receive discounts. The goal is to make freight transport more sustainable and promote environmentally friendly technologies.
