Tolls in Belgium

tolls-belgium-uta-edenred

In Belgium, a route-dependent toll is charged on motorways, regional and municipal roads – divided into the regions of Wallonia, Flanders and Brussels. The mandatory toll applies to all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes and is based on distance driven, vehicle weight, pollutant class and respective location.

In addition, a separate usage fee is charged on special routes such as the Liefkenshoektunnel. Operators determine which vehicles are subject to tolls and how the fee is calculated. For example, Belgium ensures a transparent, fair system that helps to finance infrastructure for heavy transport.

General information

Toll provider: Viapass

Tolls in Belgium are a central part of the financing and maintenance of road infrastructure and ensure safe, modern motorways, regional and municipal roads. The Viapass/Satellic system, which operates in the Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels regions, is responsible for monitoring.

For cars under 3.5 tonnes, there is no general mandatory toll on most roads, with the exception of routes such as the Liefkenshoektunnel for which a usage fee is charged. Trucks and buses over 3.5 tonnes pay a route-dependent toll which is recorded via an on-board unit (OBU). The fee takes into account the mileage, weight, emissions class and respective region of the vehicle.

Thanks to the Viapass system, toll fees are transparent and fair, promote environmentally friendly vehicles through CO₂-differentiated rates and contribute to the building, operation and expansion of the road network.

delivery-truck_multicolor Vehicles subject to tolls

In Belgium, certain types of vehicles are subject to tolls, and the fees are calculated according to vehicle class, weight and distance driven. While light vehicles such as cars and motorcycles are exempt from tolls on most roads, heavy commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, such as trucks and buses, must pay the toll.

In Belgium, all heavy-duty vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are subject to a route-dependent toll that is collected via the Viapass/Satellic system. It is used to finance, maintain and expand motorways, regional and municipal roads and to promote environmentally friendly mobility. The system is valid in the three regions of Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels and is managed by relevant authorities.

Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes subject to tolls

The mandatory toll applies to trucks and sprinters (N2, N3) over 3.5 tonnes and to mini-trailers (class N1/BC). Fees depend on the route and are based on distance driven, vehicle weight, pollutant class and region. To process the toll, an on-board unit (OBU) is required that automatically collects relevant data.

Toll-exempt vehicles

Exempted from the mandatory toll are, among others, vehicles belonging to police, fire and rescue services as well as certain agricultural vehicles. Vehicles with alternative or low-emission drives can also benefit from discounts.

Emission class

The Belgian toll is CO₂-differentiated: Vehicles with higher emissions pay higher fees, while environmentally friendly vehicles benefit from reduced tariffs. The goal is to make heavy transport more climate-friendly and promote the use of sustainable technologies.

streamline-icon-car Car tolls in Belgium

In Belgium, there is no comprehensive mandatory toll for cars, motorbikes and caravans up to 3.5 tonnes on most motorways and roads. Exceptions are individual special routes, such as the Liefkenshoektunnel, for which a usage fee is charged.

The fees for such special routes depend on vehicle type, weight and emissions class. Vehicles must pay the toll via payment machines, online portals or mobile apps. The regulation enables both occasional and frequent drivers to pay simply and transparently.

For camper vans or vehicles with alternative drives, special regulations may apply depending on weight and category. Travelling on toll roads without a valid fee will result in fines that will be levied either on site or later.

The Belgian regulation for car tolls thus offers a flexible and safe way to use special routes and tunnels without violating the mandatory toll.

In Belgium, there are different solutions for toll payment depending on the vehicle type:

For vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes

  • There is no general mandatory toll on most roads for cars, motorcycles and camper vans. Exceptions include special routes such as the Liefkenshoektunnel, for which a fee is charged.
  • Payment can be made online, at vending machines or via mobile apps.

For vehicles over 3.5 tonnes

  • The mandatory toll for trucks, buses and mini saddle tractors is handled via the Viapass/Satellic system.
  • Depending on the route, billing is carried out via an on-board unit (OBU), which records distance driven, vehicle weight, pollutant class and region.
  • Companies can pay the toll via online portals, mobile apps or prepaid accounts.

The Belgian toll system ensures that both occasional drivers and logistics companies can pay fees simply, flexibly and transparently.
